Labour's instinctive response to rising crime is to blame social conditions—poverty, inequality, lack of opportunity. These may be contributing factors, but they are not excuses for lawlessness, nor do they justify abandoning enforcement whilst waiting for broader social transformation. The immediate need is to restore consequences for criminal behaviour, not to embark on a generational project to eliminate crime's root causes.
